Even before it became Aotearoa, our land was one of the most amazing places on earth. And it still is, despite all the changes that have taken place over the past 1000 years or so.

The whole world has changed dramatically, especially in the last few centuries, and to be quite honest, we haven't taken good care of our planet. The human lifestyle is transforming the very nature of this fragile, mysterious and spectacular creation of which we are a part.

Let's face it, our environmental and conservation track record has not been good. Many native plants and animal species have already disappeared.

We are not out of the woods yet: a large number of fragile species that are still with us today, need all the help they can get to stop them from also sliding down the slippery slope of extinction.

We need to act now to prevent any further loss of species, and halt depletion of our biodiversity. Extinction is forever. We have taken so much from this wonderful planet and now it's time to give something back.

That's why the Air New Zealand Environment Trust was established. To help restore our eco-systems, re-connect us with nature and make a positive difference in the world. We must take responsibility for some of the global and national environmental problems that upset the delicate balance of our planet. Indeed, we have to stand up and lead the way in restoring New Zealand to a better state than we found it, for all future generations.

The Air New Zealand Environment Trust will help communities, support projects, give grants, as well as fund research and development into ways to enhance New Zealand's environment. It is committed to regenerating or restoring our land to its original natural glory.

Its first project is a conservation programme involving more than 100 acres on Mangarara Station in Hawke's Bay. The Trust will financially contribute to the purchase and planting of 85,000 trees over the next three years to create the conservation reserve, which will be placed under covenant to protect it for future generations.

By re-planting native forests the Trust will not only contribute to creating efficient 'carbon sinks', but also create new areas that may - one day - house our endangered species in ecological comfort and, more importantly, in safety.

The Air New Zealand Environment Trust is asking you to be a part of the journey and become an important partner in our regeneration and restoration venture.

From now on, every passenger who books a flight with Air New Zealand will be given the opportunity to donate to the Trust. When booking online, all you have to do is tick a box to make a small donation or go to

This is just the beginning and we can't do it without you
